Service Learning ~ A Passport to Personal Growth Macfarlane Park Explorers are world citizens committed to the service of others. It is our goal to help facilitate Service Learning experiences for our children. The ultimate goal is that the children, using IB Learner traits, will feel inspired to take action and make a difference in the world. We have developed a program called the Passport of Service. We are hoping to give parents, teachers and students a place where they can find the resources and opportunities for service learning. Service Learning is a part of our IB curriculum and opportunities during the school day will occur for those who cannot attend outside events. They do not have to do it all! Find something that your child is passionate about and do a little or a lot. Our community is diverse and we want our service to reflect that. You do not have to do only these events; any service your child does can be filled out on the Community Service Log.
WHAT IS SERVICE LEARNING: Service Learning is a teaching method where guided or classroom learning is deepened through service to others in a process that provides structured time for reflection on the service experience and demonstration of the skills and knowledge acquired.

The Passport of Service Program
HOW IT WORKS: Each child will be issued a passport. The passport will be kept at school either in their IB portfolios or in a pocket calender in the classroom. A Community Service Log will be sent home with your child. The Community Service Log must be filled out and returned to the teacher by the 25th of each month. At the end of the month the students who have turned in their Community Service Log sheets will be announced on the morning show, and asked to bring their passport to the media center to obtain their stamp. We are hoping to have those children that have participated in events actually make an appearance on the morning show as part of the demonstration component of service learning.
